Everyone is pretty familiar with Barrell at this point. We've done quite a few barrels with them. They consistently have new and unique selections. Especially their collection of barrel finishes. On this last set of barrels I was looking for something that tasted great but was a little different. And I definitely found it!
The first barrel I selected was an 8.5 year bourbon from MGP. That would be unique in itself. However this barrel was a 99/1 Corn/Malted Barley mash bill. I've loved this mash bill when blending with Penelope. I've never tasted this mash bill over the age of 5-years. Turns out it continues to get better. The second is a 135 proof, 14-year, Canadian Rye whiskey. After the growing popularity of high proof American Light Whiskey I wanted something to rival that. While this barrel improves greatly with a splash of water, it still drinks under that 135 proof on the label. There are 98 bottles of this barrel and I'm sure they'll go fast.

Tasting Notes: Melon and ripe cherry. Dried peaches and oak. With a splash of water the brighter and citrus fruit notes begin to show. This is a different style of whiskey. It’s nuanced and subtle. It begins to open up as it sits in the glass to really shine. The heat is apparent but it's heavy stone fruit and toffee. Finish is long with notes of peach white tea.
