Old 55 "Field to Bottle" Bourbon
|Old 55 Distillery embodies the "field to bottle" bourbon mentality. Every bit of the grain they use is sourced from their family farm or local fields. They harvest, store, mill, mash, distill and bottle in Newton, IN. Ever wondered why craft bourbon costs a little more? A bushel of yellow #2 dent corn is about $4. That’s for 56 lbs of corn. Sweet Corn that Old 55 uses is $1,040 for 50 lbs. Even worse, yields can be lower as well. For a 2,000 lbs batch of mash, they’ll get 20 gallons of whiskey. It takes them 7 weeks of distilling to fill 9 barrels. During that same period, they could’ve filled 200 barrels of their regular bourbon.
The Old 55 Sweet Corn whiskey is unlike anything I've recently tasted. There's a unique note of candy corn and bubble gum. In my opinion, it's the Bottled-In-Bond that's the real star! It's pure caramel and creme brulee.
