McKenzie DIY 7 Wheated Bourbon
|
Ok, I have to admit. This subject line is tongue in cheek. Just because a bottle won an award doesn't mean I'm going to love it. I believe in finding flavor profiles you like and buying bottles that fit that profile. Taste is subjective. My taste preferences don't always line up with what others think is good.
However, we only carry craft distilleries on Seelbach's. It's great to see products we carry take on some of the most beloved bourbons on the market today. Finger Lakes Distilling is making great whiskey. It now competes with the large distilleries in age and taste. OJ and his team at DIY selected an incredible barrel. If you enjoy wheated bourbon you may want to check it out.
DIY 7 - Eagle Cliff Falls, is a wheated bourbon handcrafted by Finger Lakes Distilling in Burdett, NY. This is the wheated barrel that was used in the blending of DIY 4 - Hector Falls. We returned to Finger Lakes to figure out the second release. After tasting barrel #1442 it dramatically outshined any blend we could create. With a 6-year-old wheated bourbon, that's no surprise!
The short barrel was hand-selected at the distillery by Caleb Santana, Ryan Sterk, Pierre Auguste and OJ Lima. It was bottled at cask strength for their social club, Taste Select Repeat, and is sold exclusively at Seelbach's.
The team at Taste Select Repeat set up this blind tasting. They selected nine tasters. For round one, everyone selected their top 3 bourbons. The bourbons were then shuffled and re-tasted. After the second round, everyone voted for their favorite. With a vote of 5 to 4, McKenzie DIY 7 was selected as the favorite over Weller Full Proof! It's always fun to experiment with Blind tastings.
