There's a new category forming and making a name for itself in craft distilling. American Single Malt has seen a huge increase in popularity over the last five years. Each year brings even more entrants into this category.
American Single Malt Defined:
At Seelbach's, we're proud to carry a wide range of American Single Malts. One of my favorites is the Rua American Single Malt from Great Wagon Distilling Co. in Charlotte, NC. Rua is made from 100% malted barley. The bottle currently boasts a score of 88 from Distiller.
The nose is sweet and grainy. There's a little bit of grassiness. It's balanced with notes of raspberry and caramel. The taste is full of cereal and brown sugar. There's some of the lasting fruitiness on the finish. All around this is an enjoyable single malt. I love exploring this category of whiskeys. Each distillery seems to add their own spin on the mash bill which plays out in the taste.
If you're looking for an entry point into American Single Malts this is a great place to start. It's on the sweeter side but approachable.
