Frey Ranch single barrels are always a hit with the Seelbach’s crowd, and demand has only continued to grow. We try to keep their Farm Strength Uncut on hand as a bridge between releases, but even that can be difficult to hold in stock throughout the year.
Earlier this year, we brought you our first-ever Five Grain Bourbon single barrel, along with a fantastic 7-year rye. Frey Ranch has always held a special place for us, but as these barrels continue to age up, they feel especially unique compared to what we’ve offered in the past. We might even argue that they are some of the best Frey Ranch barrels we’ve released to date.
Today, we’re back with a brand-new four grain single barrel bourbon.
Frey Ranch Distillery was born in 2006 with a passion to showcase the quality of the grains that go into their whiskey. Led by Co-Founder Colby Frey and Master Distiller Russell Wedlake, everything begins with the meticulous farming of grains grown on their 1,500-acre farm just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Fallon, Nevada. Every step of the process takes place on site, from growing and malting to distilling, aging, and bottling. With over 165 years of Nevada farming tradition in their family, Frey Ranch is proud to be one of the few distilleries in the world to sustainably grow 100% of their whiskey grains on estate.
Built from 66.6% corn, 11.4% winter rye, 10% winter wheat, 12% two-row malted barley, this 6-year, 9-month, 127.88 proof bourbon brings a ton of flavor. Many of the Frey Ranch four-grain barrels we’ve selected in the past lean into that familiar dry spice with cherry and apple notes that we love. The first thing you’ll notice here is a bit more oak character and a mocha frappuccino-like darker creaminess.
Rich toffee, barrel char, mature oak spice, and a hefty creaminess that feels more like a mocha Frappuccino with vanilla cream on top.
The palate is viscous and sweet-forward, but in that classic Frey Ranch fashion. Mint-kissed vanilla simple syrup, Frappuccino, dark chocolate drizzle, and loads of heavy barrel influence linger alongside caramel-coated green apple and dark cherry.
Let this one sit for a while, and it begins to grow more playful and sweet as it moves toward the finish. Citrus-kissed brown sugar syrup and plenty of toffee-dipped charred oak lead into a balanced, spiced hug.
