Sale
Age: 4.5-years
Proof: 128 proof
Mash bill: 56/30/14 Corn/Rye/Malted Barley
Bottle Count: 162 bottles
Tasting Notes: The nose is dense, sticky, and perfumed. Bright top notes of raspberry, peach, and green tea that move into leather, rich coffee cake, gobs of brown sugar, butterscotch, and toffee.
The palate is voluptuous, and the proof really lets the notes have space. It reminds me of New Riff meets Buffalo Trace meets Frey Ranch. Big spice, sweet cherry candy, green apple, lingering toffee, juicy brown sugar, leather and oak.
The finish is long and lasting with dark fruits, lingering oak, and a big leathery Kansas City hug as it hangs around.
About: Rieger’s Private Stock is an ongoing offering of single, private barrel selections. These single barrels are selected by individual retailers and each differ in age, finishing technique, and style of Whiskey. Please refer to the front label of the bottle for pertinent details.
In 2014, with guidance from industry veteran Dave Pickerell, Andy decided to leave his job in Dallas and return to Kansas City to fully commit to the distillery plan they had envisioned for years. After securing a building in Kansas City's historic East Bottoms neighborhood and months of product formulation, they were ready to relaunch the brand in October 2014, introducing Rieger's Kansas City Whiskey. Initially, they focused on whiskey due to the company's historical background in it, drawing inspiration from 1880s American whiskey production methods that incorporated Sherry as a blending agent. They sourced Corn Whiskey and Straight Rye Whiskey, adding a 15-year Oloroso Sherry to the blend, resulting in a successful launch at the 100-year anniversary of Union Station in October 2014. Kansas City Whiskey gained national recognition and was a finalist at the 2015 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. Nathan Perry joined as Head Distiller, the distillery became operational in May 2015, and the product range expanded to include Premium Wheat Vodka, Midwestern Dry Gin, and Caffè Amaro. In 2021 and 2022, they released Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey and Bourbon, respectively. Their annual barrel production has steadily increased since 2015, with over 1,200 barrels of Rye and Bourbon Whiskey aging for a minimum of 4 years in their rickhouse, aiming to reestablish J. Rieger & Co. as a premier whiskey producer in the country.
