About: Dave Pickerell, the legendary Master Distiller and our good friend, played a huge role in shaping our bourbon process—starting with the foundation of it all: our mash. Every drop of Ragged Branch bourbon comes from our own grain, milled and mashed daily, then distilled with the expertise and tradition Dave passed down to us. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t wait around—we do everything right and we do it right now. From the start, we’ve grown 100% of our raw grain on owned or leased land, ensuring our crops absorb the distinct minerals of our local soil, creating a flavor that’s unmistakably ours. Every day, we mill our grain fresh, setting the stage for a bourbon that’s as rich in character as it is in tradition.
Once the mash is ready, it ferments for about four days as the yeast works its magic, converting sugars into alcohol. From there, we run it through our custom-built 500-gallon Vendome still—a copper pot-column hybrid that carefully distills one barrel’s worth of bourbon a day under our close watch. That spirit then rests in new, charred American white oak barrels inside our Barrel Barn, where time and patience do their work. When our Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey has fully matured, we cut it to bottle proof and bottle it on-site, never compromising on quality. The result?
