About the product: Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Union Horse Distilling Co. in Lenexa, Kansas, just outside of Kansas City. Established in 2010, the family owned distillery uses locally grown grain to make whiskies that reflect the intersection of the Midwest and the Great Plains.
This straight bourbon whiskey is our first from Union Horse and from Kansas, and it is further evidence that Midwestern distilleries are making truly excellent whiskey (and yes, Kansas counts as the Midwest - at least according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and to the owners of Union Horse). This was made from 80% corn and 20% rye and aged for 5 years in a 53-gallon barrel. The nose is spicy and inviting, with hints of maple-drizzled flapjacks. The palate has notes of melted dark chocolate, toffee, caramel creams, and baking spices. Fresh, yet fully rounded.
