Sale
Age: 5 year and 10 months
Proof: 126.92 proof
Mash bill: 79% Dark Pumpernickel Rye, 11% Corn, 5% Wheat, 5% Malted Barley
Tasting Notes: A beautiful and creamy entry on the nose with lovely orange essence. Rich and maple forward with coconut and a bit of mango.
The palate is luscious and coating. A touch of salted caramel apple but continues with cherries and cream and lingering whipped cream and caramel. There’s a heavily charred ‘Kelvin barrel’ type of presence, along with toasted citrus peel and thick molasses. With water a touch more smoked and licorice notes draw out.
The finish is heavy wood sugars and dark chocolate, again giving those Kelvin-like vibes as well seasoned oak, cooked brown sugar syrup, and spiced dark fruits linger long.
Bottle count: 179 bottles
Seelbach's Story: Middle West Spirits may be a new name to some, but it has deep roots and a strong reputation. During our visit, we toured their impressive new distillery just outside Columbus and were blown away by the scale and precision of their operation.
Founded in 2008, Middle West set out to highlight the unique flavors of the Ohio River Valley. Everything they do - from distilling to aging and packaging -happens just north of downtown. Their approach blends craftsmanship, originality, and a clear respect for their regional roots.
They also began distilling America’s first Dark Pumpernickel Rye Whiskey - a signature four-grain rye made from dark pumpernickel rye, non-GMO open-pollinated yellow corn, soft red winter wheat, and 2-row barley.
If you’ve been with us for a while, you might remember our last Dark Pumpernickel Rye - it’s been over 14 months, and that one sold out on day one. That last one landed just outside my Top 5 Ryes of 2024, and this new 5-year, 10-month release might just edge it out.
