We introduced you all to Montgomery back in April, and they may be the best distillery we've discovered for Seelbach's this year. After the quick sellout of our Ancient Wisdom Rye single barrel and their first round of core releases, we knew we had to go back for more.

Montgomery Distillery opened in 2012 as Missoula's first craft distillery, built around a simple idea: grow the grain, mill it, ferment it, and distill it, all in-house. Their wheat and rye come straight from the fifth-generation Montgomery family farm in central Montana, on land that's been in the family for over 100 years. Distiller Christopher Conley has been running the stillroom since day one, building a whiskey program that now spans multiple ages of rye, single malt, wheated and high-rye bourbon, along with a variety of finishes.

Their Mama Tried bourbons use a 51/39/10 mashbill, with either rye or wheat as the secondary grain. The 90-proof wheated Mama Tried may be my favorite Weller alternative currently on the market: silky and sweet like melted Neapolitan ice cream.

Naturally, we knew we had to get our hands on a single barrel to share with you all, and that time has finally come. This 6-year, 129.4 proof wheated bourbon is among the first bourbon single barrels to come out of Montgomery, and we're excited to be one of the first to bring it to you.

The nose is thick and creamy, with spiced, caramel-coated green apple and fresh crème brûlée. The deeper you inhale, the more nougat, spice, and freshly charred oak come through.

The palate is similarly plump and robust, with chocolate-covered cherry and more of those caramel-dipped apple spices, while also bringing in fig jam and just a touch of sweet mint near the end before mature, seasoned oak moves into focus.

The finish follows the palate, as a creamy mix of chocolate, caramel, and toffee carries into a long finish of dried berries and semi-dry oak.
