Tumblin Dice 8-Year Single Barrel Rye # 115.8Proof - Selected by Seelbach's
|I feel like I say it at least once a week, but this has been an outstanding year of releases if you are a rye lover. Last year's release of Tumblin' Dice Small Batch Rye was my favorite rye all year long. Not a few weeks after that we were presented with an opportunity for an 8 year single barrel and immediately jumped on it. While that was the first rye I had on my 'top' list going into 2024, there are already 12 or so releases I'll be combing through towards the end of this year trying to crown my favorite. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised and also excited when I heard we had yet another single barrel 8 year for us this year... but can it hang with the others? Let's find out.
Tumblin Dice 8-Year Single Barrel Rye # 115.8Proof - Selected by Seelbach's
- The nose alone is worth camping with for awhile. Warm apple cider, apple pie filling, loads of caramel, floral-toned honey, candied lemon peel, French vanilla ice cream, and lovely wood tannins. This nose is custardy, perfumed, and well inviting.
- The palate continues the perfumed citrus notes found on the nose, with the addition of antique oak, leather, and smidge of vermouth qualities with vanilla, toffee, and balanced baking and citrus spices continuing on.
- The finish is long and creamy, balanced with fresh tobacco, soft oak, baking spices and deeper luxardo cherry and toffee.
Comparing the three we’ve had so far, If the 8-year small batch was middle of the road with its sweetness and herbal spice, our previous single barrel kicked up the citrus and spice, while this barrel lays on all the decadent and dense sugary notes while not forgetting its age. Another lovely showing from Proof & Wood.
Proof & Wood is based out of Washington DC and focuses on sourcing and blending. Bottles from their DC series are getting harder to find. Their core business is sourcing and bottling fine American whiskies, but they also import other high-quality spirits from around the world that were not available in the US previously. Founder Dave Schmier is delighted to be able to create both cocktail-friendly bottlings for value-focused bartenders and high-end collectors’ editions for connoisseurs.
