After an immediate sell out of Pursuit United Double Oaked and our Double Oaked Private Select, we are back again with another fantastic Private Select... but this time a Rye!
We were recently in Louisville visiting the Pursuit Spirits team for a Private Selection, or PUPS as they call it. PUPS micro-batches are crafted using Pursuit’s 4000+ barrel inventory of diverse mashbills, distilleries, and cooperages. Each blend is purposefully unique, using quarter, half and full barrels to create varied profiles. After blending, the whiskey is rebarreled for additional aging, resulting in complex flavors unavailable anywhere else. While we've done a few bourbon PUPS already, this was our first Rye. The base of this microblend is four Kelvin barrels: one 95/5 from BBC, and three 52% ryes from Sagamore, so quite a bit different from their standard Rye offering without the addition of a Sagamore 95/5 component. It was then put back into one of the Sagamore barrels before ultimately being selected. This is a sweet and drinkable rye, with a great touch of age to it.
Orchard fruit, brown sugar simple syrup, lemon custard filled glazed donuts, beautiful baking spices, complimentary oak, toasted orange peel and fresh leather. This is a gorgeous nose.
The palate begins with a myriad of candied fruits and fresh tobacco before lingering citrus, nuanced baking spices, a bit of dark chocolate and warming oak spices.
The finish is heavy and trailing with sugary spices and long lasting tobacco and oak.
