Nashville Barrel Company 11-Year Rye
|A name that needs no introduction on Seelbach's is Nashville Barrel Company. We've selected barrels from them for nearly four years. They're an Independent Bottler focused on Kentucky and Indiana barrels for their various whiskey labels, and one of the brands that just seems to do it right every time (and with plenty of awards to back it up). Since our last barrel pick they've expanded beyond their distillery to The Tasting Room in downtown Nashville where folks can try flights of their whiskeys, rums, agaves, and now even California wines.
Today, we have our oldest pick from them yet - an 11-year cask strength Indiana rye. In my opinion, this is an early contender for rye of the year.
The nose is a deep, tightly packed mingle of well aged oak, worn leather, perfumed spices, brown sugar, heavy caramel, and vermouth. Sit with this one, it's beautiful and continues to open up.
The palate hits on the well aged oak immediately, soaking onto the tongue. Toasted citrus peel and a myriad of baking spices expand while dried cherry and plum continue to saturate.
The finish is long and warming with cracked black pepper, anise, and allspice, yet damp with dried fruits caramel, cigar box, and a revisit to the worn leather and well aged oak. Take your time with this one, as the oak and leather continue to sit on the palate well after the sip is done and is one of the best parts of the pour.
