Lost Lantern Summer Collection 2024
|
If one really wanted to explore all that craft can offer under one umbrella brand, I would immediately point you to Lost Lantern.
As an independent bottler of American whiskey, Lost Lantern routinely works with all styles of American whiskey, including bourbon. Before last summer they had never before devoted such a large release entirely to one single style of whiskey, but because of the reception to their first Summer of Bourbon they are back again with Volume II.
Lost Lantern's Summer Collection last year was one of their most successful releases thus far, and they want to continue that again this year. This Summer Collection, Lost Lantern Summer of Bourbon 2024, once again has a simple message: Great bourbon now comes from all across the United States. It can take many forms, from bourbons made from 100% heirloom corn, to finished bourbons, to Tennessee whiskey. It can come from many climates, from the Deep South to the Pacific Northwest and everywhere in between. And this leads to an increasing number of great perspectives on America's iconic spirit.
The Lost Lantern Summer of Bourbon II Collection includes nine whiskies from twelve states across all three of their product lines. With the quick sell-out of their blends: Mississippi Memory and Far Flung Bourbon II, we are back with their single barrel releases.
Corbin Cash is best known for their rye whiskey, yet this 7-year-old straight bourbon whiskey is just as spectacular. Made from 75% yellow corn grown on a neighboring farm, 15% rye, and 10% malted barley, this is a powerful bourbon with notes of blueberry lemon cake, powerful oak, and nutmeg. Very rich and deep, balanced by fruit and sweetness. Hazmat.
This six-year-old single cask was made from 72% corn and 22% rye, both grown on the Omlin family farm in Quincy, Washington, as well as 6% malted barley. The welcoming nose has notes of clementines, orange cake, and vanilla buttercream. The palate is rounded, complex, and very balanced, with hints of orange and almond cake, warm spices, and rounded oak. The finish is long, warm, and calming.
This straight bourbon whiskey is our first from Union Horse and from Kansas, and it is further evidence that Midwestern distilleries are making truly excellent whiskey (and yes, Kansas counts as the Midwest - at least according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and to the owners of Union Horse). This was made from 80% corn and 20% rye and aged for 5 years in a 53-gallon barrel. The nose is spicy and inviting, with hints of maple-drizzled flapjacks. The palate has notes of melted dark chocolate, toffee, caramel creams, and baking spices. Fresh, yet fully rounded.
This straight bourbon whiskey is made from 100% Jimmy Red corn, a rare heirloom varietal that High Wire helped bring back from the brink of extinction. Aged for 3 years in a 53 gallon barrel from Charlois Cooperage, this has a deep, nutty, sweet flavor, with notes of fresh orange zest, walnuts, and sweet cornbread. It is our first release from High Wire and from the coastal Southeast.
This cask is our first from Leiper's Fork, our first from the state of Tennessee, and our first Tennessee whiskey (and yes, we count Tennessee whiskey as bourbon!). Made from 70% corn, 15% rye and 15% toasted malted barley, it underwent the Lincoln County process of maple charcoal filtration and was aged for 5 years in a new oak barrel. It has notes of toasted vanilla and dried mint on the nose, with eucalyptus, wintergreen, and fresh oak on the palate. Full, warm, and balanced.
This straight bourbon whiskey, our first from Rock Town and from Arkansas, was made from 82% Arkansas-grown corn, 9% Arkansas-grown wheat, and 9% malted barley. Aged for 4 years in a 53-gallon barrel in the Arkansas heat, it has notes of vanilla, graham cracker, and lemon custard on the nose. The warm, welcoming palate has hints of fresh sweet corn, lemon chess pie, nutmeg, and clove.
Our first-ever finished bourbon comes from Boulder, one of our most sought-after partners. Made from their unusual high-malt mashbill, this was aged for 4.5 years in new oak and finished for 2.5 years in an Armagnac cask. The rich nose has notes of golden raisins and honey-drenched graham crackers. The palate has hints of chocolate covered cherries, cotton candy, clove, and nutmeg. The Armagnac finish magnifies the underlying sweetness and spice, creating a bright, bold, and unique single cask.
