Augusta Distillery Hazmat Barrels

Chasing age and proof can be a dangerous game! Finding bottles with age statements in the teens is rare. Combine that with hazmat (140+) proof and the bottle quickly turns into a unicorn. I was first introduced to Augusta Distillery a couple of years back. I picked up a bottle of 13-year and it was good. But, it unfortunately got lost in my whiskey cabinet. That was until their sales director, Matt Groves, reached out a couple of months ago. After a visit to the distillery it's hard to not be excited for what's happening in Augusta. Just 45 minutes East of Cincinnati, Augusta is in the heart of Northern Kentucky. Their distillery is set to open in January 2024. It will be an incredible stop of any bourbon trip. But, that's not we're here to talk about today!
Augusta Distillery sourced aged whiskey since they started. The team mentioned some short, hazmat barrels during one of our first calls. From the production side, this is disappointing. As a distillery/brand you buy by the barrel. Not by the bottle. As a consumer, the words "short barrel" and "hazmat" are glorious things to hear. Since there are so few bottles, we're releasing three barrels at once. Make sure to stay up to date with tasting room releases from Augusta by joining their mailing list.

Here is the breakdown of each barrel:
Tasting Notes: This is a heavyweight champion in his prime. Comes out swinging with rich oak, dried tobacco and cherries. On the palate it's fresh cracked pepper, candied ginger and clove. With a splash of water the sweeter notes turn grassy. Notes of fresh cut sugar cane and arugula start to show through. This all leads to Chinese five spice and black tea on the finish.
Tasting Notes: Caramel, charred marshmallows and dried strawberries. The profile is far more fruitier than I would expect at 13-years. The heat is there but kept in check by the sweeter notes. Cinnamon and nutmeg develop towards the back palate. Toasted oak and orange zest dominate a medium finish.
Tasting Notes: Punchy orange peel and citrus oil. I usually don't denote common aromas like vanilla and caramel. However, they're so prominent here it's worth noting. The palate is vanilla bean ice cream drenched in flambe` cherries. Sandalwood and toasted oak chips standout on an oily, viscous mouthfeel. This all leads to a long black tea and charred stone fruit finish.
