A True Unicorn: Oade 46-Year Armagnac

This particular barrel has a really unique story, and at 46 years old, it’s the oldest barrel I’ve ever selected. A true unicorn.
This is the second release in our Private Collection Series with OADE, created to showcase some of the rarest and most distinctive casks in Gascony and the extraordinary breadth of flavors and styles that Armagnac can offer.
The first release, “Impossible,” demonstrated that not all casks age equally: at just 20 years old, the Armagnac possessed an oak influence, concentration, and maturity far beyond its years. This second release tells the opposite story—how 46 years in wood can, under the right conditions, create a spirit that ages gracefully with remarkable balance, depth, and complexity.
Domaine du Carpoulat is a sprawling vineyard in the Ténarèze region of Gascony, purchased in the 1970s by Yves Duflo, a former banana plantation manager in the Caribbean. Shortly after acquiring the domaine, Yves hired Jean-Jacques Bordes as cellar master and produced his first vintage in 1974. Jean-Jacques remained the guardian of the cellar after Yves’ passing, continuing in the role until his retirement in 2024, when he passed the torch to his son, Florient.
Today, the cellar holds only around 250 barrels spanning six decades, with just a handful remaining from the 1970s. Each surviving cask is a piece of the domaine’s history to be treasured. Their Armagnacs are distinguished by naturally higher proofs and powerful notes of tropical fruit—a character shaped by an exceptionally dry cellar, itself a rarity in Gascony.
OADE discovered Domaine du Carpoulat several years ago, at a time when they had paused all sales and distribution of their Armagnac. In 2023, during a brief window when the domaine opened its cellar and made a small portion of its stock available, they were fortunate enough to convince them to part with eight casks before once again closing their doors. Their Armagnac had never before been imported into the United States, and after this collection of eight barrels is gone, it may never be again.
This 1978 Seelbach’s bottling represents the oldest private selection ever made from Domaine du Carpoulat, and likely the oldest that will ever be made. A rare and exceptional spirit, 46 years in the making.
The nose is beautifully juicy and concentrated, with dried cherry skin, cranberry, and then almost a honey simple syrup moving into tropical fruit cocktail, pineapple juice, and soft yet mature seasoned oak. The longer it rests, the more it reminds me of Old Crow Chessman.
The palate is balanced but complex. Well aged, but graceful. The fruits from the nose continue long and syrupy on the palate, almost like a black cherry-heavy syrup moving into orange zest, apricot jam, and mixed tropical fruits (think pineapple, papaya, plantain).
The finish revisits that creaminess first found in the nose, now more like custard or butterscotch candies. It’s sticky and slow to leave, never forgetting those concentrated fruit notes previously found, but begins to move toward underlying layers of freshly brewed espresso and coffee cake, with a long, trailing, buttery-sweet oak and even longer lasting cola herbal kissed cola concentrate.
