A 10-Year Wheated Single Barrel Under $80???

Old Elk was founded by Curt and Nancy Richardson, the entrepreneurs behind OtterBox, with a focus on investing in whiskey and building inventory long before building a large distillery. To develop its recipes, the team partnered with longtime Seagram’s and MGP master distiller Greg Metze. Rather than purchasing existing stocks, Old Elk contracted MGP to produce its proprietary mash bills under Metze’s direction, laying down thousands of barrels years before the brand’s national launch. That patient approach is particularly easy to appreciate in today’s release.

It has been a while since we’ve had a new Old Elk single barrel on the site, but this felt like the right one to bring them back.

This is also our first Old Elk selection since the Fort Collins brand was acquired by Middle West Spirits last year, beginning a new chapter for a producer that has always taken a slightly different approach to American whiskey.

Our latest Old Elk single barrel is a 10-year wheated bourbon distilled at MGP using a mash bill of 51% corn, 46% wheat, and 3% malted barley. At under $80, what’s not to love about a 10-year, cask-strength wheated bourbon single barrel?

The nose is rich and heavy, leading with maple sugar and sweet antique oak before moving into vanilla, orange slice candies, and salted caramel cold foam.

The palate is viscous and velvety, with sugar-coated blueberry, grape, and cherry fruit sweetness balanced by layers of brown sugar, caramel pudding, buttery croissant, and slightly spiced but mature oak.

The finish draws closer and closer to crème brûlée, with slightly torched sugar and lingering vanilla custard in both flavor and texture.

Alongside our single barrel, we also have Old Elk’s new 10 Year Collection. The lineup brings together three of the brand’s signature whiskey styles, each aged for a full decade.

The 10-Year Straight Wheat Whiskey, bottled at 103 proof, leads with toasted oak, baking spices, apples, and brown sugar before opening into peaches, apricots, sweet cream, and mature oak.

The 10-Year Straight Bourbon, bottled at 105 proof, offers rich oak, fig jam, almond, cocoa powder, and subtle honeycomb on the nose, followed by bright fruit, caramel, vanilla, light stone fruit, and oak sweetness.

Finally, the 10-Year Wheated Bourbon, also bottled at 105 proof, brings aromas of brown sugar, French vanilla, and caramel cream with chocolate pastries, vanilla custard, sweet oak, and vanilla cream across the palate.
