Two bourbons from the Deep South, one big, one even bigger.
High proof and low proof are very much relative terms, and this bundle from Lost Lantern proves that. The two whiskies in it have a big gap between them in terms of proof, but even the lower proof one, Fiddler Soloist Georgia bourbon, is a rather beefy 129.9 proof. The higher proof one, Dread River Alabama bourbon, is a hazmat 141.8 proof.
And that’s because both of these bourbons, which have quite different mashbills and flavor profiles, reflect the intensity and heat of the Deep South… but in different ways. The Dread River has a fairly traditional wheated bourbon mashbill, but is aged in a climate that’s substantially hotter than traditional bourbon country. The Fiddler has a more unusual mashbill that features malted wheat, malted rye, and chocolate malt, making it an entirely different take on traditional bourbon.
Dread River Distilling Co. Alabama Straight Bourbon Whiskey
The high proof half of the pair, from a young distillery in Alabama. A wheated bourbon aged in a very hot, humid climate, this is bold, deep, and powerful, with big chocolate and leather notes. Hazmat.
Fiddler Soloist Georgia Straight Bourbon Whiskey
The lower proof half of the pair (relatively speaking), from the most acclaimed distillery in Georgia. 7 years old, this is all about the chocolate notes - rich, earthy, with hints of cocoa
powder and rich baking spice.
