Starlight Blueberry Port Finished & Maple Finished Bourbons

I truthfully thought we had released all the Starlight single barrels we were going to release this year, but boy was I wrong. I know several of you are probably reading the line "Blueberry Port Finished" and are about to close the email, but I assure you this is one of the best Starlight barrels we've had all year.
The maple finished bourbon is breakfast in a glass. While sweet-forward, this is one of my favorite finishes Starlight does. After 4 years of aging in new, charred American oak, this bourbon is finished in a barrel used for aging maple syrup for several months. If you were ever looking for a bourbon without the burn, this 112.8 proof drinks like a rich 90 proof.
The blueberry port can easily play in your head as a gimmick, but the way the flavors coalesce in this finish is such a testament to what Starlight does so well. Finished for 3-8 months in a Blueberry Port barrel, this falls closer to that amaro, digestif, after-dinner sipper category... and it's fantastic.

My initial gut on ‘maple finish’ would lean sweet forward on the nose, but this one leans more sweet tea and dark brown sugar. Dense, creamy, and inviting. On the palate all the maple oozes forward. Gobs of sweetness, almond croissant, orange slice candies, Belgian waffles baked with crystalized sugar and syrup. The finish is the best part of this pour - the maple soaks into the bourbon and lingers on the palate perfectly. Crispy Belgian waffle and rum-like sugar cane, lightly toasted oak and a huge wave of brown sugar. Starlight #23-2171-1 Blueberry Port Finished bourbon 108.3 proof Deep, romantic, and lightly perfumed: this nose leads with rose infused chocolate, cardamom, and chocolate covered blueberry, raisin, and açaí berries. The palate follows true to the nose, woodsy, and slightly botanical enhancing all the flavors. Rose infused chocolate, expressed orange peel, and brown sugar coated dark fruits. There’s something a bit gin-like about it, or a digestif. The finish is dry, saturating, and incredibly complex. This is a perfect after dinner pour. |
