Seelbach's Juke Joint Private Blend & Single Barrel
|
Blue Note Juke Joint burst onto the bourbon scene in the summer of 2021. The Kentucky Bourbon barrels were some of the first released after surviving a rickhouse collapse in June 2019. These barrels laid exposed to the elements for four long months. They were finally moved to a new warehouse and continued to age. That's part of the journey these barrels have been on. Some purchased Juke Joint for the unique story. They returned for another bottle because it's so incredibly good.
I started this blending process with 12 barrel samples. I would taste through all samples in one sitting and add a 2-3 word descriptor. I.e. "oak and fruit", "sweet, spice, vanilla", etc. I'd then return a few days later to test if anything had changed. From there, I began to build the blend. My original goal was to create a three barrel blend. I realized that each extra barrel added depth and complexity. After narrowing it down to four different blends, I tasted them back to back days. Blend 5BBL was the clear winner both days! It was cinnamon sweet with a warm buttery mouthfeel. That's why we named this blend "Snickerdoodle"

After reviewing my notes for the blend I noticed something. There were several standout barrels among the 12. But, barrel #17952 was far and away my favorite. This "caramel apple" barrel had to become a single barrel. Thankfully, Blue Note was willing to let us bottle this as a single barrel.
