As a recap, Pinhook releases a new bourbon and rye each year, each connected to a promising young thoroughbred. The whiskey in each release is the best expression of their barrels at that moment in time, and they blend and proof releases to be as unique as the horse on the label. The Vertical Series is a one-time opportunity to follow this group of barrels, all filled within months of each other, as they age. Pinhook has allowed a select number of groups and retailers to be a part of the vertical series. With each release we will select a barrel. This is our 7-year rye whiskey, and dare I say the best one yet.
This 7-Year rye is the 4th of 9 vintages in the True Single Barrel Vertical Series, following this group of barrels as they age from 4 to 12 years old and experience the evolution of flavors over their nine-year journey. These barrels were distilled at MGP in Indiana; aged, blended, and bottled at Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, KY, by Pinhook Master Blender, Sean Josephs.
The nose starts with dark maple syrup, toasted mint sugar, warm cedar, and bright citrus peel complemented with baking spice.
The first sips are velvety and coating, dense with maple syrup, toasted vanilla, spiced oak, and tobacco.
Enveloping baking spices the more you sip, dark fruits seep out as this pour continues to grow more and more layered.
This rye is my jam, and I hope it's yours too. I'd love to hear what you think of this barrel if you pick it up, click that button below the collection page and let me know. While you are clicking around, check out the other Pinhook offerings we still have in stock.
