Is This Finished Whiskey of the Year?

|

One of the most under the radar release series we do here at Seelbach's has to be the Dancing Goat Sourced Whiskey Series. We've seen 21 year light whiskey, a 7-year port finished rye, a 7-year Colombian oak aged straight bourbon, corn whiskey finished in cherry bitters, bourbon and malt blends, bourbon and light whiskey blends and more. That said, these continue to be some of the best value products we release - and always for the flavor curious.  Release 007 was near and dear to my heart, but the same can be said for release 008 today. Their eighth release in the series revisits their port finished rye we saw in release 002, now two years older and seemingly double in intensity of flavor. Between this and our recent ASW Maple Encore release we have quite the battle of Finished Whiskey of the Year contenders.

This 8-barrel blend was aged a minimum 8.5 years in once used bourbon barrels and finished for 4-16 months in freshly dumped port barrels.

I’ve said a lot of things taste like a cocktail in a glass… but this is a cocktail in a glass.

The nose is ripe and rich strawberry preserves, with plenty of brown sugar syrup and yet still structured with spice and warm oak.

The palate is saturating and jammy, think strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, concord grapes, and cherries all cooking together into a rich and slightly perfumed fruit medley.

The finish is an onslaught of syrupy, fruity goodness. For as fruity as it is, it still lingers with balanced baking spices and holiday dried citrus notes. Easily one of the best finished whiskeys of the year so far.
