Frey Ranch Single Barrel Bourbon & Rye Selected by Seelbach's
|Frey Ranch Distillery was born in 2006 with a passion to showcase the quality grains that goes into their whiskey. Everything is grown, mashed, malted, distilled, matured, and bottled on Frey Ranch. With over 165 years of Nevada farming tradition in their family, Frey Ranch is proud to be one of the few distilleries in the world to sustainably grow 100% of their whiskey grains onsite. Their bourbon is a four-grain recipe of non-GMO corn, winter cereal rye, winter wheat, and two-row barley, and their rye being 100% of that estate grown winter rye.
Just a few short months ago when the Seelbach's team met up in Jacksonville for a few days we had the privilege of selecting these barrels, some of the first selections Blake, Dee and I did together. The rye being one of my favorite single barrels I've been a part of selecting this year, and nearly hazmat to boot.
Super rich butterscotch on the nose with underlying purple and red fruits, lemon, and lime.
The palate is thick. Balanced fruitiness with spiced butter cake. Trailing with lingering oak.
The finish is intense toast, lingering with charred orange oil.
If I were to ever describe a bourbon as 'everything but the kitchen sink' it would be this one. From floral to sweet to nutty to spicy, this one packs it all.
The nose is graced with floral and salted caramel notes on the very front, but then grows into candied pecan and hazelnut with a hefty spiciness.
The palate is rather maple sweetened initially, but make no mistake - this is a bold and spicy pour. Macadamia nut cookies, toasted oak, and more of an herbal mix of spices than the nose led on.
The finish is peppery, lingering with dark chocolate, oak, and a long minty trailing.
