Art of Alchemy Blend of Straight Whiskies No. 1
|A blend of Kentucky rye with Indiana rye and bourbon? I was already intrigued. A couple of months ago I had a conversation with Roy Milner about a new project he was working on. Roy is a founding partner at Blackberry Farm Brewery. He's also been in the beverage space for over two decades. We chatted about their upcoming spirits brand. I love the approach they've taken in regards to blending. They're not working to a specific flavor profile or style. They simply blend until they find the best results. This is often times a much more time consuming process. Roy brings his expertise from the beer world. He also brought in dozens of friends and contacts from the bourbon world. It helps when you're able to lock in rye whiskey barrels distilled by Jim Rutledge! The resulting blend is complex and well balanced. I'm excited to see these blends evolve.

Tasting Notes: The nose is tangerine with a little bit of oak and toasted black pepper. It's soft on the nose. The palate is where this one starts to shine. There's tons of ripe fruit. Lots of baking spice. It's candied fruit topped with dried chili flakes. The competing flavor profiles work well to elevate the whiskey. The finish brings the palate in for a soft landing. It's lighter with some nice oak and fruit. |
