Baltimore Spirits Company Epoch Rye | Seelbach's Special Edition
|Made right in our backyard, Baltimore Spirits Company's Epoch Rye is a fascinating reflection of Maryland's rich rye whiskey heritage. Maryland has its own distinct style of rye whiskey, known for its smoother and slightly sweeter taste compared to other ryes from regions like Pennsylvania or Kentucky. This style of rye was hugely popular back in the day when Maryland was bustling with distilleries, churning out gallons of this delicious spirit. When Prohibition hit, like many other distilling regions, Maryland's whiskey industry took a hit. Today, a new generation of distillers are reclaiming this historic style, paying homage to America's whiskey-making legacy while satisfying the palates of modern whiskey enthusiasts.
This is a unique and truly fantastic rye that Dee selected - and if you remember, she only picks hitters. This Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey is a single barrel bottling, and spent over 2 years in new charred American Oak barrel before spending another 2 years in first use Madeira cask. It is 75% unmalted rye and 25% malted rye, double copper-pot distilled, bottled at 114.6 proof. This whiskey is a huge raisin bomb up front from the long Madeira aging.
- The nose is heavily fruity and incredibly rich. Figs, raisins, and orange oil lead the way with well layered vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg in the background.
- The palate is oily on the tongue. An absolute raisin bomb with clinging maple syrup. While a plethora of spices are present, they sit beautifully underneath all the honeycomb, maple, and an onslaught of fruit.
- The finish lasts forever - juicy and oily with excellent spice and nice wood tannins. This is a unique rye you do not want to miss.
