Virgil Kaine Ribbon-Rail Rye - Seelbach's Select

Regular price $79.00 Sale

Age: Blend of 4 & 5-year

Mash Bill: 95/5 Rye/Malted Barley

Proof: 99.2 proof

Distiller: Mgp Ingredients

Finish: Revelry Brewery Chocolate Malted Porter

Tasting Notes: The nose blossoms with green apple, rose water, and baking spice. On the taste, there are notes of ripe cherry, fresh-cut oak, and chocolate malt balls. It really does taste like a cordial cherry on the palate. The taste transitions to pipe tobacco and a splash of dry cedar. Not necessarily woody but more of the smell you get from a walk-in humidor. The finish is long and pronounced. It bounces between the cedar and bright cherry notes.

Ribbon-Rail Rye is a blend of straight Rye Whiskeys. They created this unique blend that consists of 5-year-old rye, 4-year-old double-barreled rye. Virgil Kaine partnered with Revelry Brewing to finish the rye whiskey in chocolate malted porter beer barrels. Seelbach's was able to select one of these. The result — a one-of-a-kind rye whiskey with the ultimate balance of spice and sweetness, along with unmistakable notes of cherry and chocolate.

There are all kinds of nuances to this release. First, the malted barley used in the porter is the same malted barley used by MGP. The rye whiskey was blended and put into steel tanks. The rye barrels were then used for the porter aging. There was a total of 14 barrels used. However, because of angel's share only 8 chocolate porter barrels were needed.
