DESCRIPTION:
Located in Noulens, on the Maubet farm, in the heart of the Armagnac vineyards, this House has belonged to the Fontan family since 1907. Directed in the early 2000s by Nadège and Sylvain, the fourth generation, it produces rich and powerful Armagnacs like this particularly sunny and complex version. Deeply rooted in its terroir, it is also fruity, floral, medicinal, and empyreumatic (apricot kernel). Powerful, complex. Marmalade, toasted almond.
TASTING NOTES:
Nose: Firm, powerful. On the first nose, beeswax, varnish, and leather constitute a very dense first olfactory sequence. Allowed to breathe, the nose opens up with equally complex notes of marmalade, Armenian paper, eucalyptus, and tobacco. Scents of linden, cedar, and orange zest then gradually arrive at the front of the aromatic palette.
Appearance: Orange copper
Palate: Lively, slender. In line with the nose, the attack on the palate is a subtle blend of chocolate, orange blossom, grilled almond, and marmalade. In the mid-palate, aromatic plants (sage, savory, rosemary) and vanilla pods counter notes of varnish, apricot kernel, and royal jelly. The aftertaste is slightly camphorated and empyreumatic (burnt wood, incense).
Overall: Long, racy. At the start of the finish, raisins, cocoa beans, Emery cloth, and apricot jam review the heady, suave, and syrupy character of the taste palette. The retro-olfaction is liquoricey and its very fine grain evokes the sandy soils of Armagnac. The empty glass shines with balsamic (cypress, pine) and empyreumatic (prune, apricot kernel) freshness.
