Blend Information: The rum and whiskey were blended in a stainless-steel tank and allowed to sit for a period of 3 days. Wheated bourbon, rye whiskey, and toasted bourbon casks were filled with the blend and allowed to age in a warehouse for 20 months.
Finish: Rye whiskey barrel (I'm sure you can guess based on the barrel number) for 20 months
Barrel number: THH-224048
Proof: 111.6 Proof
Tasting Notes: Nose: Lemon oil, dry hay, caramel, pine, white chocolate. The palate is fermented pineapple and raw sugar. A little bit of nutmeg and vanilla extract round things out. While it is sweet upfront a great note of soil and earthiness develops on the back palate.
Story: There are a lot of tall tales in the whiskey world. "Accidents" tend to make good marketing. However, with Fortuitous Union, this story was as real as it gets! Co-founder of Rolling Fork Rum, Turner Wathen, was at the bottler watching their first batch of rum barrels get dumped. His heart sunk when he heard the forklift screech to a halt as someone on the floor yelled "there's still juice in this tote!!!" You see, there was 90-gallons of 95/5 MGP rye whiskey still in the stainless steel tote Wathen's rum barrels were dumped into. You probably remember this from science class. There's no way to "unblend" two liquids.
After an admitted expletive laced conversation, Wathen's partner tried the new blend. He said "call me crazy, but this is actually really good." The quick response was a simple "F.U." The first rum/rye blend was born. Rolling Fork debuted the Fortuitous Union (FU) label in 2018. We're excited to claim one of the first private barrels they've released. Yes, our blend was finished for 20 months in a Kentucky wheated Bourbon barrel.
