Tasting Notes: Nose: Lemon wafer cookie, baking spices. Palate: Black pepper throughout, hints of leather and red apple skins, lots of depth. Dried mango and caramel notes make this drink more like a bourbon than a rye at times. There's a medium toasted cinnamon stick finish
The Story: In June 2022, I made a visit to Nulu with Nick from Breaking Bourbon, Brian from Sipp'n Corn and Brian from Entry Proof Podcast. I was hoping to get a double oaked bourbon, but also explore their inventory a little more. We debated on this selection more than any other that day. We were able to whittle down our choices to two barrels. There was a barrel that was characteristic rye. It had lots of minty, herbal and spice notes. A delicious barrel. Then there was a barrel that I had to double check the barrel head twice. It was baking spice and stewed apples. I could've sworn we accidentally pulled a bourbon sample. It was completely off-profile for a 95/5 rye whiskey. After a retasting and blind vote the off-profile barrel won!
