Age: 6-Year-Old
Mash Bill: 36% Rye Bourbon
Source: MGP
Proof: 115.6
Barrel: C78; 6-Years in a East Bernstadt Cooperage American oak barrel; 7-Months in a new Speyside barrel
Tasting Notes: Nose: Sugar cookies with brown butter, creme brûlée, vanilla bean, hints of worn leather. Lots and lots going on with the nose! The palate opens Blackberries, black pepper. It starts to move towards torched maple syrup. The high rye spice balances nicely with this toasted barrel. The finish is LONG with mint, pepper and caramel.
The Story: In June 2022, I made a visit to Nulu with Nick from Breaking Bourbon, Brian from Sipp'n Corn and Brian from Entry Proof Podcast. I was hoping to get a double oaked bourbon, but also explore their inventory a little more. This is one of a few barrels I probably would've selected on paper. It's 6-years old from the MGP's high rye bourbon mash bill. I love that age range and mash bill. The addition of a Speyside barrel just enriched the flavor profile. To me, it's more double bourbon than double oaked. Yes, the oak is there. The second barrel heightens all of the flavors I enjoy in a bourbon. It's heavy sugar cookie and brown butter up front. That mellows to fruitiness and rye spice on the mid and back palate. Truly a fantastic whiskey.
