Lost Lantern is an independent bottler of American whiskey. Our founders, Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski spent a year traveling across the United States in search of great whiskey. They crisscrossed the country, visiting distilleries in dozens of states, and meeting the brave founders and distillers who bet their livelihoods for a chance to make whiskey… often in places where spirits haven’t been made in a hundred years or more. The best whiskey reflects where it’s made, how it’s made, what it’s made from, and who made it. Lost Lantern’s mission is to shine a light on those whiskies and the independent spirits who make them.
2022 Single Cask #1: Smooth Ambler West Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey
This is the second of a pair of bourbon casks that we selected from Smooth Ambler Spirits. We have always admired Smooth Ambler. In fact, we don’t think Lost Lantern would exist if Smooth Ambler hadn’t already built such a strong tradition of sourcing and blending. Yet Smooth Ambler has also been making their own whiskey for many years, and we are excited to be able to showcase this single cask of their wheated bourbon at cask strength. This West Virginia straight bourbon whiskey was distilled on Smooth Ambler’s own column still from a mash bill of 71.5% locally grown yellow corn, 21.5% soft red winter wheat, and 7% malted barley. It was aged in a 53-gallon barrel for 5 years. With toasted almond, white chocolate, and cranberries on the nose, the palate is rich and spicy, with clove, black cherry, and deep oak flavors.
