McKenzie Bourbon - Bourbonr 6th Anniversary
Mash Bill: 70/20/10 Corn/Rye/Malted Barley
Proof: 105.6 proof (barrel proof)
Barrel: 53-gallon, Chinkapin Oak 36 months air-dried staves
Barrel Date: 9/10/13
Bottled Date: 9/10/19
Tasting Notes: The nose is orange peel and ripe cherries. There are notes of mint and baking spice. The taste is initially sweet with candied pecans and vanilla. It's rounded and well balanced. The sweetness transitions to toasted coconut or roasted pistachios. There are soft nutty notes from the Chinkapin that I love. The finish is long. It begins with peach tea and ends with grape skins and almonds. Overall, this one packs a lot in!
This bottle is a celebration of the Bourbonr 6th Anniversary. The 6th anniversary is the wood anniversary. What better way to celebrate than by highlighting Chinapin oak! Chinkapin (Quercus muehlenbergii) is a sub-species of white American oak. It grows in the north-east United States as well as the Ozarks in Missouri. Initially, Chinkapin oak was mixed in with other oak (around 5%) to make barrels. However, some barrel makers have experimented with Chinkapin only barrels. These barrels seem to impart a softer and nuttier flavor instead of the hasher and more tannic wood notes.
I'd also like to thank Superfly Bourbon for the label design. If you need some design work done (bourbon or unrelated) check them out!
